Three logs with some healthy patches of
Riccardia palmata (above) were the highlight of a one hour search in woodland within the Upper Clydach Valley above Rhyd-y-fro this morning. As with my visit to the adjacent square last week I never actually made it to the river, such was the quality of the feeder stream. Associates of the
Riccardia logs included
Calypogeia muelleriana, Nowellia curvifolia, Plagiothecium curvifolium, and some lovely fruiting
Tetraphis pellucida.
Atrichum crispum was noted along a peaty watercourse and there were swathes of
Plagiochila porelloides (below) along the roadside bank of St Illtyd’s Walk, all adding to the enjoyment of an outing on a refreshingly pleasant day for a change. SN70D (NPT) finished on 68, with a few samples still to check.

That's a lovely patch of palmata...I've still not seen it in South Wales. Nor Nowellia for that matter!
ReplyDeleteWell done Barry, that tetrad was begging for more records. Riccardia palmata and Atrichum crispum are nice additions to the list for that valley. Are you going to tackle SN70E (currently on 32, I think)? We've knocked up the totals for the Rhos area (SN70L) to just under 60, but there's a bit more to do there and I'm confident we'll pass the magic number. That corner of NPT is now looking a bit more respectable.
ReplyDeletePS: SN70G now >60
ReplyDeleteThanks for the updates Charles. It may be worth sending me a sync so we're both up to date.
ReplyDeletePS I'll probably look at to SN70F next. (NB - SN70E is >80)
ReplyDeleteSN70E >80 really? Have you been up there since we last synced, because it's 32 in my database?SN70F is already >60.
ReplyDeleteJust caught up with a MapMate backlog...325 bryo records so far this year, so I should probably sync with Dave soon.
ReplyDeleteI was there on 1st April last year - check if you have these records please. It was the day I saw the ulota calvescens on the bridge.
ReplyDeleteI have SN70F as being on 58, so you must have been there recently I guess? In which case I'll go for SN70K, next, which is currently at 34 ... unless you've been there too?
ReplyDeleteThe only records I have for 1st April 2015 are ours for Blaenrhondda (SN9201).
ReplyDeleteSN70F has 62 records in my database. We haven't been there recently.
SN70K is currently on 52 according to my records. We added about 20 spp. on Jan 16th.
