A very quick search of three
Acer cf.
velutinum in Penrice Estate (in the hope of finding
Habrodon) this afternoon produced 22 species, the best of which were
Neckera pumila,
Brachytheciastrum velutinum,
Orthotrichum striatum &
O. stramineum. Sandra found a hibernating Grey Shoulder-knot on a nearby fallen trunk, which was rather nice.

Mid-week,
Bryum donianum was found growing with
Bryoerythrophyllum recurvirostrum amongst grassy overhangs on the sandy slopes below Cwm Ivy Tor, an interesting habitat.
N. pumila is common in my in-laws garden in Cornwall, but I've yet to record it in Wales.
ReplyDeleteIt's one of those species that's probably thinly scattered, but widespread in Glamorgan. This updated a pre-1950 record for SS48.
ReplyDeleteKeep hunting for the Habrodon anyway! I haven't given up hope on Bute Park holding a few more interesting epiphytes...there are just so many trees to check.
ReplyDeleteTrust Sandra to find a good moth so early in the season. Well done!
ReplyDeleteI have to say that this bryo blog is really fantastic and reflects the great enthusiasm (and knowledge) of the regular contributors - keep up the good work.
